The sports law training at István Széchenyi University in Győr is successful

István Széchenyi University has always placed great emphasis on sports. To this end, the Foundation has carried out a number of infrastructural developments – for example, it has established a sports park on the campus in Gyor – and is constantly improving opportunities for recreational and competitive sport for students, and runs its own, highly successful sports club and student-athletes are provided with individual scholarships and curricula And other conditions if necessary. It affects a slightly different area, but two continuing education courses launched in February 2022, Sports Law Adviser and Sports Law, also fit that line.

Dr. Simon Joseph, the influential professional director of the courses said: With the courses they wanted to fill a void in the western Hungarian region.

“Sport is linked to many branches of the legal system, from labor law to civil law, so lawyers and other professionals working in this field need special knowledge. The number of applicants has proven that there is a demand for these trainings in the country.”

The courses include, among others, basic knowledge of law, sports law, European federation law, international sports law, media law and law Broadcasting and business communication skills, students learn negotiation techniques, financial knowledge, sports economics, and sports marketing. Support systems, enforcement, bylaws, and the background science of the sport are also discussed.

“The courses are carried out online, which has the advantage that even people who live far from Győr can complete them more easily. The first year, now with a diploma, included professionals from several famous clubs – Diósgyőr VTK, Pécs MFC and Szombathelyi Haladás. Our goal is to provide participants with modern legal and economic knowledge, as well as practical experience, which is indispensable in other sports clubs and organizations. That is why among the trainers there are employees from the University’s Faculty of Law, the Center for Physical Education and Sports, as well as external lecturers. Attila Brown.

Assistant Professor Dr. Tamas Gyumuri, Head of the Center for Physical Education and Sports, added: Sports is one of the most dynamically developing sectors, and its effective operation requires personnel equipped with sufficient experience. As an example, he mentioned the contracts of professional athletes, which can affect the coaching association for several years, and if not concluded properly, this may lead to financial loss or damage to the player’s interests.
