BC Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, will be renamed “Christine Sinclair Place” for one night next week in honor of the captain’s final game with the women’s international team, Canada said on Monday.
Sinclair, the all-time leading international scorer, announced her retirement from the Canadian women’s national team in October, and her final match will be on December 5 against Australia.
“The legacy of Christine’s career will live on and will continue far beyond her tremendous accomplishments on the field,” Charmaine Crooks, president of the Canadian Football Association, said in a press release.
“Renaming BC Place Stadium for its final game is a fitting tribute given its West Coast roots and the special moments in the place where we celebrated together as a nation.”
The renaming of the stadium will be one of many tributes paid to Sinclair throughout the evening, including lighting up the stadium in red and white with the number 12.
The 40-year-old Sinclair’s international career includes a record 190 goals for Canada, an Olympic gold medal and six World Cup appearances.
Sinclair still plans to play for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League next season, after which she expects to still be involved in the game in some capacity. Reuters
