The Swedish Education Minister will return to books instead of digital devices

The use of digital devices under the age of six will be completely eliminated.

The Swedish government plans to completely eliminate digital forms of learning for children under the age of six – Announce Swedish Ministry of Education with AP.

Lotta Edholm Minister of Education, took office eleven months ago as a member of the new center-right coalition government. He has been one of the biggest critics of the complete introduction of digital technology into education. The head of the ministry announced in August that the government wanted to withdraw the Swedish Education Agency’s decision, which would make the use of digital devices mandatory in kindergartens. The ministry will now go further, completely abolishing digital education in this age group.

Although Swedish children still perform above the European average in terms of reading skills, results of PIRLS, an international survey examining reading comprehension of fourth-grade students, showed a decline between 2016 and 2021.

Although the lag may be partly a result of the coronavirus pandemic, or may reflect the growing number of immigrant students who do not speak Swedish as a first language, education experts say excessive screen use during school hours may also contribute to young people falling behind. There is clear scientific evidence that digital devices impair rather than enhance students’ learning abilities

– Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced in August its National Education Digitization Strategy.
