The Swiss-Italian border is being redrawn due to melting glaciers

September 30, 2024 – 1:37 pm

Switzerland agreed on Friday to amend the border section under the Matterhorn, one of Europe's highest mountain peaks, at 4,478 metres, and the Italians will soon be able to sign the agreement presented by a joint committee. In 2023 – The BBC reported on the incident. The redrawn borders were determined according to the economic interests of both parties.

The border adjustment will be in the Plateau Rosa area near the Karel refuge, and the largest ski center is Zermatt on the Swiss side.

Much of the Swiss-Italian border passes through areas covered by glaciers or permanent snow, but as a result of the melting of the glaciers, this natural border is changing. Therefore, both countries are striving to control borders.

The BBC indicates that Switzerland's glaciers lost four percent of their volume in 2023, the second largest loss ever after a record contraction of six percent in 2022.

The melting is caused by successive very hot summers and reduced snowfall in the winter of 2022, according to the Swiss glacier monitoring network Glamos.

As a result of rising temperatures, last year the remains of a German climber who disappeared thirty-seven years ago were also found on a melting glacier near the famous mountain peak.

The exact border changes will be implemented and the agreement published once the two countries sign it.
