US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a statement on Monday that the United States will close its embassy in Kiev before a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine occurs.

“Due to the dramatic acceleration of the march of Russian troops, we are temporarily moving our embassy in Ukraine from Kiev to Lviv,” Blinkin said in a statement. The State Department chief stressed that the Biden government remains in contact with Ukraine’s political leadership and is “intensifying diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis.”

Blinken stressed that the current steps are only “precautionary measures” and that the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is unwavering. The Foreign Minister again drew attention to the ongoing efforts to find a diplomatic solution.

“We are in contact with the Russian government, President Biden has called President Putin, and I’m in talks with Foreign Minister Lavrov,” he said. “We are confident that we will be able to return our staff to the (Kiev) embassy as soon as conditions permit,” Blinken added.

The Head of the Ministry drew the attention of US citizens residing in Ukraine to register with the State Department and be informed of new developments related to the security situation.

On Saturday, the State Department announced that it would end consular service for Americans at the embassy in Kiev, which can be used temporarily at the US mission in Lviv, western Ukraine.

The Biden administration last week called on Americans still in Ukraine to leave the country within 48-72 hours, as Russia could launch an attack on Ukraine at any time. In a Twitter post on Sunday, the US State Department drew the attention of US citizens to the fact that they can enter Ukraine from Poland through the land border.

US officials constantly encourage Americans to take advantage of the opportunities offered by commercial flights and leave Ukraine before the outbreak of conflict. The US government will not support a mass evacuation like the one in Afghanistan.
