The justices were skeptical of a previous Colorado court ruling that barred the former president from the ballot because of his role in the anti-state insurrection.
Trump appealed to the Supreme Court, and his lawyers argued before the committee that what happened at the Capitol was a riot, not an insurrection.
The case hinges on an interpretation of the US Constitution. Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the holding of public office by officials of the United States who have sworn an oath to the Constitution and then incited, participated in, aided, or abetted insurrection.
The US Supreme Court has not yet ruled, and it is not known when this commission will issue, but once it is established and issued, it will be implemented throughout the United States.
