They developed a battery that could be a hack

Today’s popular lithium-ion batteries perform less well in cold or hotter weather than average weather. To solve this problem, researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a battery that operates as efficiently at -40 and +50 degrees Celsius as previous lithium-ion devices at average temperatures, he writes. hvg.hu.

Engineers modified the original lithium-ion battery in such a way that no chemical reactions occur, despite the high energy density. This would impair its efficiency, so it can only be improved to a minimum. The success of the development is indicated by the fact that, according to the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the new device retains at least 88 percent of its capacity even at extreme temperatures, and the efficiency is about 98 percent.

The new battery is an important technical advance because the battery pack in electric cars is attached to the car’s chassis, so on a hot summer’s day the asphalt is much warmer than its surroundings. Specialists hope that the new battery can be included in electric cars, so that a longer trip can be made during the winter, even in cold regions, compared to now.
