STEAM DECK NEWS – ShadPS4 is being developed very widely thanks to the same processor architecture as modern computers.

The ShadPS4 emulator is still far from being ready, as it is still only in version 0.1.1 in its development phase. Based on the two videos shared by GeorgeMoralis, we can already see Dark Souls Remastered loading, accessing the character creation screen, and even starting the introductory movie. Of course, it doesn’t get to the gameplay, regardless, it must be said that this is already an impressive result, as ShadPS4 has arrived here in a very short time.

Furthermore, the emulator has so much potential that we could soon be using it in a portable format, so if we have a powerful enough laptop, we could also get ShadPS4 to run on it. That’s what MaliceSpeedwagon did, running eight games in Asus ROG Ally Turbo mode. It wouldn’t even run Bloodborne, but it was a success for smaller games. Sonic Mania and Undertale run great already, so it’s actually possible to play PlayStation 4 titles in a portable way by running them locally (not from the cloud!).

So ShadPS4 is in a better position compared to RPCS3. It’s a PS3 emulator that had a tough time because the console’s processor, the Cell, was nearly impossible to emulate properly on PC for years. Today, PS3 emulation is in pretty good shape, but if PlayStation 4 emulation progresses at this pace, it could catch up to the quality of previous-gen emulation in no time. In vain, it’s significant that Sony (and Microsoft) switched to x86-64 rules on the previous generation of consoles, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series remained the same.

However, we can already say that within a year the ShadPS4 will be in such a state that at least most games can be launched on it. Don't sue Sony…
