On the other side of the world, in North Korea, there is an incredibly expensive hotel that has never had a guest before. The £1.6billion hotel’s popularity isn’t supported by its titles either.
Construction on Ryugyeong Hotel began more than 35 years ago in 1987, but it has not yet opened its doors. What distinguishes the hotel is that it was built in North Korea at a cost of 1.6 billion pounds sterling, or approximately 706 billion Hungarian forints, and its dimensions far exceed the dimensions of other accommodations. According to plans, it was supposed to receive its first guests 25 years ago, but no one has stayed there yet. Thus, it is considered the tallest uninhabited building in the world.
The triangular hotel is also known as Mordor and the Hotel of Doom due to its height and simple appearance.
According to plans, the hotel was supposed to have 3,000 rooms and 105 floors, but work was suspended in 1992, and 16 years later, in 2008, construction began again. One reason the construction has continued for years is the economic crisis in North Korea, which began after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The hotel was scheduled to open in 2012 and was to be managed by a German company that eventually backed out of the deal. Thus, Ryugyong Hotel remains empty to this day without receiving a single guest.
