Until now, the number of members of the European Parliament was 705, but after the current elections, its number will become 720 members.
Looking at individual factions, the EPP not only maintained its leadership role, but was able to increase its number of seats by nearly ten representatives. The European People's Party alone was able to obtain more than a quarter of the seats, which currently number 185, but not all results have been received yet, as the final result of the Irish vote is missing from the official tally. The People's Party's victory means that its main candidate, Ursula von der Leyen, still hopes to continue.
The second force remained the social democratic faction, the Socialists and Democrats, which managed to obtain about 135 seats, but lost some seats. In third place came the liberal Let us renew Europe! The Renew Europe (RN) faction is dead, but has lost about 20 seats since 2019, primarily due to the poor performance of French President Emmanuel Macron's Ennahda party.
The European Council, which was able to increase the number of its seats by a few states, came in fourth place. Even to their right, the Identity and Democracy Party ranked fifth, but at the same time showed the largest increase in the number of states, thanks primarily to the victory of Marine Le Pen's National Unification Party in France.
After the Liberals, the Green Party is the other big loser in the election, as they lost nearly two dozen representatives, so they only have 71 representatives so far. The Left Party, which includes far-left parties, suffered few losses and remains the smallest faction in the European Parliament.
However, the party structure can still be significantly modified due to the presence of 54 newly elected representatives who do not belong to any of the factions of the outgoing parliament.
