A gardening company in Paderborn has been supplying the German capital with Christmas trees for 13 years. This should be understood primarily as examples that should be placed in the public square, which certainly do not fit the living room. The company received an important order from Berlin this year as well, as it had to deliver a 21.7-metre-high Nordmann pine tree so that the city's residents would have something to admire on the occasion of the famous holiday.
A Unimog U435 truck with a 350 hp diesel engine was selected for this mission. Mercedes-Benz Trucks introduced this version of the engine with a minimum power of 54 hp a year ago. And it's not just performance, the maximum torque has also increased by 180 Nm compared to previous versions, so that the Unimog engine can now deliver 1,380 Nm of torque at 1,800 rpm.
Naturally, a two-axle truck does not have a large enough platform to transport such a large and heavy tree. That's why a deep three-axle trailer was used for the job, on top of which the 8.8-ton pine tree was placed. By the time it reached its destination, they had traveled at least 400 kilometers, so they did not take the pine tree to the neighbor. Moreover, the entire operation had to be performed at night. Anyone who saw it must have been impressed by the little Unimog, which was capable of towing a very large load for its size, as the entire vehicle is barely five meters long.
After the pine tree reached its destination, it was lifted from the trailer with the help of a crane and finally placed on its feet so that its decoration could begin.
Unimogs that perform special tasks are not uncommon. Initially, there was a snow plow version, and today there are also convertible and camper versions.
