As he approached 1.4 million kilometres, he started to feel strange things about the engine. The diagnosis was quick: the cylinder head gasket had cracked. And although he knew it would be neat to cover a million miles with the original engine (it was 880K at the time), professionalism prevailed: he chose reliability and changed the engine. They found a block with a mileage of 160,000 km and installed it: after which the car traveled another 1.2 million km.
By the way, such high mileage is not so surprising if we know: the 2.7-liter four-cylinder 2TR-FE engine is a legendary powerful build. The transmission oil was changed at 780,000 kilometres, the six-speed automatic transmission itself at 2 million kilometres, and the original spark plugs lasted over 1.1 million kilometres. The original alternator lasted 640,000 km (later installed alternators had to be replaced often), but the steering gear is still the original.
Who knows how long our 2008 Tacoma would have lasted over 1.625 million miles (2.61 million kilometers) had Mike Neal not died tragically. His heirs chose not to drive another Mike's car: it is now kept at the dealership where Mr. Neal purchased and maintained it at the time.
