Thirteenth. At the Gyula Honey and Gingerbread Festival, the results of the Mixed Honey and Best Hungarian Honey of the Year competition were announced on Saturday.
In 2022, the best Hungarian honey of the year was Diane Richard’s Acacia honey from Chivar.
According to the jury’s assessment, the best acacia honey was made by Gábor Hegedűs in Hódmezővásárhely, the best rapeseed honey from Sándor Gál Balázs from Dunaújváros, and the best blended honey from Dian Gergő in Csővár.
In the variety honey category, the linden honey created by Hansel Robert of Kaposmere wonZoltán Tojzán facélia honey won in Pécsvárad in the Other Species Honey category.
First place in the sunflower honey category went to István Jó, who keeps bees in Nagytarcsán. The first place in the special honey category went to Alb György’s chocolate and hazelnut honey from Gyula – Competition Director János Árgyelán, Békés County Councilor of the Hungarian National Bee Association (OMME), informed MTI.
A record 448 samples were submitted to the call this year, judged by a five-person professional jury. Evaluation criteria included purity, water content, characteristic color, aroma nature according to type of honey, purity of taste, packaging, as well as harmony and overall impression.
Approximately sixty samples reached the second round, first analyzed analytically by Eurofins Food Analytica Kft. Then, they examined the water content and the percentage of fructose and glucose, and the composition of pollen grains in honey was also determined. This is how the final ranking was formed.
Winners are entitled to receive their own honey label next year, proving their score in the competition to buyers.
Peter Bruce, President of the Hungarian National Beekeeping Association – who was himself a member of the jury – said that the honey competition in Gyula is the only competition at the national level that is important from a beekeeper’s point of view.
