Tornadoes formed in about 60 locations on Friday, with the most violent being near Omaha, Nebraska, and Minden, Iowa. The US Weather Service had previously issued about 100 tornado warnings, and this was the stormiest day this year.
A tornado partially collapsed a factory building near Omaha, trapping 70 workers. Emergency crews rescued everyone, and only a few people reported needing treatment for minor injuries. Authorities reported that about a dozen people in the area needed hospital treatment for injuries resulting from the storms.
The governor of Nebraska traveled to the disaster area on Saturday.
In neighboring Iowa, the tornado caused the worst damage in the small town of Minden, where, according to local authorities, 30 to 40 residential buildings were completely destroyed. Iowa's governor declared the county a disaster area on Saturday, freeing up funds for damage repair and reconstruction.
As of Saturday, more storm warnings were issued for the entire central belt of the United States, which is home to about 55 million people, from Texas to the Great Lakes. The chance of new tornadoes forming is highest in Texas and Oklahoma.
