Two tourists went missing after they went swimming in strong winds and high waves off Greece’s Halkidiki Peninsula, a local coast guard spokesman said on Sunday. It was reported that three men from North Macedonia went swimming in the sea on Saturday and two of them went missing, the spokesman told state radio.
A man was rescued on Saturday, the search for the other two continued on Sunday, and the Coast Guard assisted by helicopter, fishing boats and volunteers in the area.
Over the weekend, inclement weather caused problems across Greece.
- There were reports of flooding from the resort islands of Thassos (Northern Aegean) and Skiros (the largest of Sporades), where cars were washed away and cellars were flooded.
- State radio reported that roads were closed due to landslides in Skyros, and two bridges were washed away.
- It rained all night in Athens and Crete. According to the forecasts of the Meteorological Service, the weather conditions will ease tomorrow, Sunday.
The rains were welcomed in many parts of the country as the risk of wildfires decreased after a prolonged period of heat and drought. On Thursday, the fire department reported 378 wildfires in seven days.
