Verstappen: I’d rather be a hero in Japan

The 2022 Formula 1 World Championship continues with the Singapore Grand Prix and one of the most pressing questions this weekend is whether Max Verstappen will manage to win the singles championship. The Dutchman does not dare to think of a second world title yet, and according to him, it is “unrealistic” for so many people to put this expectation on his shoulders.

Verstappen has reached the first match point And based on his dominance in the last 5 races, the championship crown may be placed on his head at Marina Bay. However, for this, the Dutchman must win the race so that Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez score very few points during Sunday’s race.

“I have to win the race, Checo can’t finish 4th, Charles must finish 9th or worse,” Verstappen explained the situation on the press day of the Singapore Grand Prix. – However, the chance of that is very small, it’s not a realistic picture at all and that’s why I don’t think much about it. First of all, I want to enjoy the weekend, but of course my goal is to win.”

The 31-time race winner added that it would mean a lot more to him if he won his second world championship in Honda’s home country of Japan. Given his advantage, remaining races and points to be earned, he has a much higher chance of doing so.

“I think Japan would be a better place to secure the title” – continued Dutch excellence. – I’m really looking forward to spending the weekend there, because we’ll be back there after a two-year absence. Suzuka is an amazing track and I have special memories there, because I did my first Formula 1 free practice there. Apart from that, it will also be important because it will also be a Honda race at home and it will be my first real chance to win the title.”

However, at the start of the season, after zeroing in on two technical flaws, it was not seen that Verstappen would defend the title he won in 2021 so easily. After Australia, Charles Leclerc led the championship by 49 points over the Dutchman, but thanks to a string of fatal errors by Ferrari, the deficit in Monaco is now 116 points.

Verstappen somewhat regrets this, because “half really want them to be in conflict with Ferrari for championships.”
