Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that the Turkish Parliament would approve Sweden’s entry into NATO if the United States handed over to Turkey the F-16 fighter jets it had requested for a long time. The Turkish President’s statement is not surprising, as we wrote previously, it was likely that Turkey would prevent Sweden from joining NATO. The United States is not delivering the fighter-bombers in part because the Turks are also buying Russian weapons.

Erdogan was speaking to reporters on the plane while on his way home from the Azerbaijani Republic of Nakhchivan, where he met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The Turkish President said that this issue had already been discussed at the meeting of the Turkish-American Foreign Minister last week in New York. He added that they agreed to terms with Washington, which means handing over F-16 aircraft from the United States, and agreeing to Turkey’s accession. Erdogan added: “If the United States keeps this promise, the Turkish Parliament will also keep its promise.”
