Western Digital’s SSDs are unreliable, and customers have sued the company

SanDisk Extreme drives have become unusable apparently for no reason.

As we wrote on PCW a few days ago, in recent months more and more users have reported that SanDisk Extreme V2 and Extre V2 Pro portable hard drives have become unusable. The portable model performed particularly well in various tests, but after a few days or weeks of use and disconnection, the devices do not recognize the data storage devices, appear unformatted, and the data on them becomes unusable. According to reports, even formatting does not help in this case.

The company acknowledged the error and released a firmware update in May. Accordingly, the following models are affected.

  • SanDisk Extreme 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00)
  • SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 4TB (SDSSDE81-4T00)
  • SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 2TB (SDSSDE81-2T00)
  • SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00)
  • Western Digital My Passport 4TB (WDBAGF0040BGY)

However, they never dealt with the data loss and associated inconveniences, prompting Nathan Crum to take the Western Digital decision-makers behind the trademark to court.

In the lawsuit, they’re trying to prove that the data stores are flawed, that the company is intentionally deceiving its customers, and even trying to wipe out stocks with deep discounts. Knowing this, customers buy another trusted drive, or risk losing their data, which cannot be recovered even if they receive new hardware from the company after the failure.

The court process is currently in the preparatory phase, but if enough angry clients are found, it could become a class action.
