If we listen to the locals.
A recent survey of 2,000 adults in the UK’s most popular place on Instagram.
Cornwall’s Mount St Michael’s, Northumberland’s Isle of Skye and Northumberland top the list, but the list also includes the famous Norfolk Cliffs of Hunstanton – the only place on the east coast where you can see the sun setting over the sea to the west.
Scottish sites included Fort William, Orkney and Loch Away.
Half of the respondents travel within the country in search of scenic landscapes, and almost the same number say this is key to taking the best photos. A clean, natural background, sunrise or sunset, and absence of people are also important for a good photo. Adults take an average of fifteen photos per trip.
Paul Sweeney, managing director of Sky Mobile, which conducted the research, said the survey also found that 39 per cent of people who post on social media are more likely to visit a scenic spot to share photos of it online. According to the study, it takes an average of twenty minutes for a photo to reach a social media site after it has been completed, and respondents post an average of four posts during each trip.
Among respondents, the most popular destination in the UK is the seaside, followed by the countryside and the woods. Popular beaches include Lulworth Cove in Dorset, Sennen Cove in Cornwall and Whitby in Yorkshire.
Ninety per cent of those surveyed are aware that there are probably beautiful places in the UK that they have never heard of, and thirty-eight per cent want to explore more of their British favourites.
