Winter Olympics: The defending Canadians are eliminated in curling

The regular season of curling in mixed doubles at the Beijing Winter Olympics has ended. The biggest surprise is that defending champions Canada can’t keep up the fight.

The final round of curling mixed doubles matches was exciting, as in addition to the fact that the Italians had already finished in first place, four national teams also competed for the other three places in the semi-finals. The Swedes finished their matches with a score of 5/4, the Canadians, the British and the Norwegians had 5 wins and 3 losses, and the winner will definitely advance.

The Norwegians defeated Switzerland in a close match, while the British confidently defeated the Americans. In the most difficult situations were the defending champions, the Canadians, who faced the Italian winning team of the regular season. They went 7-5 before the last finish, but the Italians tied and then won the extra finish too – success was two millimeters (!), because the Italians’ stone was much closer to the center.

Thus, the North American and Swedish teams ended with the same score, but since the latter won their match, they can continue to the semi-finals, which will begin at 1:05 pm Hungarian time.

The binaries are Italy, Sweden, Norway and Great Britain. In the regular season, the Italians, who are still at 100 percent, defeated the Swedes, and the Norwegians, the bronze medalists of the last Olympics, beat the British, but this means nothing, because a new match is coming. .
