Firefighters say the flames are out of control.

Wildfires continued to wreak havoc in Tenerife, where on Thursday some 4,500 people were ordered to leave the island’s settlements and outposts. The fires that broke out on Wednesday have already burned at least 6,425 hectares, and firefighters describe the fires as “uncontrollable”.

It was the most complex fire in the Canary Islands in the past 40 years, said the district chief, Fernando Clavijo. According to him, they are running a race against time, because the temperature rises more on weekends.

The fire spread south of Teide has already been contained by fire extinguishing, but the flames on the north side of the volcanic mountain are still not under control.

In addition to the thousands of evacuees, more than 3,800 people have been instructed to do exactly the opposite: not to leave their homes. Roads to the mountains have been closed, but the island’s two airports are said to be operating as normal.

350 firefighters and soldiers and 17 water-laden aircraft are participating in the extinguishing. In the Canary Islands, the weather has been very hot in recent weeks, and large areas have dried up, which is why forest fires spread easily.

Summer has been full of wildfires, thousands evacuated recently from flames in Greece, but the most destructive of the summer so far ravaged the island of Maui, burning the historic city of Lahaina to the ground and leaving at least 106 dead.
