According to US Customs and Border Protection, it is now possible to apply for a US ESTA through the mobile app.
US Customs and Border Protection has launched a new mobile app (Customs and Border Protection) for travelers eligible for entry under the Visa Waiver Program. The app allows travelers to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) permit from a smartphone, mobile device or tablet.
The ESTA mobile app is available in 24 languages in 40 countries participating in the Visa Free Programme, including Hungary. The program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without needing a business or tourist visa for a period of 90 days or less. Travelers must have a special passport capable of storing biometric identification and must apply for a valid ESTA approval before travelling. There is a $21 registration fee. The ESTA permit is usually valid for two years (or until the passport expires).
Until now, travelers can only apply for the permit through the official CBP website, and that option still exists.

With the new app, the entire application process is possible: travelers start the application, scan their passport photo, scan and confirm their passport, upload a live video selfie to confirm their identity, enter personal and travel-related data, and answer eligibility verification questions They will review and submit the application, can edit and update their application and profile, and receive notifications through the app. The app can be downloaded from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
Since the introduction of the ESTA system in August 2008, CBP has approved millions of applications.
