According to US Customs and Border Protection, it is now possible to apply for a US ESTA through the mobile app.

US Customs and Border Protection has launched a new mobile app (Customs and Border Protection) for travelers eligible for entry under the Visa Waiver Program. The app allows travelers to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) permit from a smartphone, mobile device or tablet.

The ESTA mobile app is available in 24 languages in 40 countries participating in the Visa Free Programme, including Hungary. The program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without needing a business or tourist visa for a period of 90 days or less. Travelers must have a special passport capable of storing biometric identification and must apply for a valid ESTA approval before travelling. There is a $21 registration fee. The ESTA permit is usually valid for two years (or until the passport expires).

Until now, travelers can only apply for the permit through the official CBP website, and that option still exists.
