Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom director talks about the return of monsters in the game

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an epic adventure, but what would an epic adventure be without deadly monsters? Game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi recently spoke to Nintendo Dream about how they decided to incorporate the different monsters spread throughout the game’s various environments. One example of this is that since Link can ascend into the sky, they wanted a scary flying monster with wings, which reminded the team of Gleeok, which had not seen the light of day for some time.

Among the new monsters, some have not appeared again in the series for a long time. How can this be achieved?

Fujibayashi: For monsters, we prioritized gameplay when creating them. To match the sky, caves, underground and other new areas, we thought about which monsters would be able to do well in them. For example, we wanted a monster that could rival Lynel from Breath of the Wild in terms of strength in the new sky regions, so it needs wings to fly and be big and look powerful…and when we thought about that, we remembered Glyuk. While thinking about gameplay, we looked back to see if there were any monsters that fit what we needed from the older games, and if there were, we modified them to be implemented in Tears of the Kingdom. For the caves, to match the terrain, we wanted a monster that could stick to the ceiling; Since there was no monster with this characteristic in previous games, we created the new monster Horriblins. Gameplay-wise, it’s possible to craft ranged weapons using the “Fuse” ability, and monsters like Horriblins make this feature shine.
